Other bird species worth mentioning are Rock Pigeons, three species of doves, at least four cuckoos, Burchell’s Coucal, Woodland Kingfisher, Hoopoe, Red-billed wood-hoopoe, two Barbets, Woodpeckers, Fork-tailed Drongo, three shrike species, Bokmakierie, Grey-headed Bush-Shrike, Glossy Starling, Grey Louries and Grey Hornbills. The garden is frequented by a large variety of birds, during the winter months, sugarbirds and orioles are regular visitors, feeding on the nectar produced by the masses of Aloe flowers and other nectar-producing flowers like those of Cotyledon barbeyi. Visitors are welcome to spend some time relaxing in the shade of a large number of trees, indigenous to the area ( bring your picnic baskets, we have tables throughout our nursery where you can enjoy our garden and meet up with friends while adhering to social distancing). We try to expand this array of colour with large beds of Namaqualand daisies. ![]() With most of the aloe species and naturally occurring hybrids in flower at this time of the year, complemented by a large number of aloe cultivars, it is a display worthwhile experiencing (as long as there is no severe frost in May!). The winter months are by far the most colourful in our garden. There are also several attractive and aromatic shrubs like Pelargonium and Plectranthus. There is a wide range of indigenous bulbs in the garden, including species of Eucomis, Haemanthus Hypoxis, Ledebouria, Scilla, etc. In addition, many other succulents and other plants lend beauty and colour to the garden throughout the year. Some of the north African and Arabian aloes (as well as a few South African ones) flower in spring, summer, and autumn. Aloe 'Polyphylla' aka the 'Spiral Aloe' is quite simply stunningly beautiful!
